How a Pressure Switch Works

This part plays an important part as your furnace prepares to work in your house.

Here’s what happens after your thermostat’s call for heat:

  • Your furnace’s control board begins running the draft inducer blower motor. This drains combustion gases from the heat exchanger and moves in new gas and air so the burners can fire.
  • When the pressure switch senses that enough air is being pulled into the burners, it closes and commands the control board to ignite the furnace.
  • Your furnace ignites and provides heat.

What Happens When a Pressure Switch Fails

When your pressure switch isn’t functioning correctly, you’ll likely hear the fan start and the switch clicking a couple times before the furnace shuts down completely. When a part isn’t performing right, your furnace will turn off to protect you.

Your furnace will show you something is wrong with a red flash from its indicator light, which it uses to present error codes. It uses this red light to flash code, like Morse code.

You may see quick flashes or an alternating slow flash as it passes on a fault code.
