The Joseph Groh Foundation is a wonderful organization that offers financial support to those in the construction field who are living with life-altering injuries. Each year the association honors numerous recipients with a grant and in 2016 the Joseph Groh Foundation was excited to present Adil Karamally as a recipient.
Adil, born in Pakistan, received his MBA from the University of Chicago and in 2003 bought ProStar Mechanical Services of Anaheim, CA and earned his HVAC and general contracting license. Three years ago, Adil experienced a major stroke at at the age of 48. He lost the ability to use his left arm and the stroke left his left leg seriously impaired, leaving Adil with foot drop. Because he could only walk while using a heavy brace, his muscles began to deteriorate and his doctors were concerned that he would ultimately end up restricted to a wheelchair.
Unable to work, Adil’s wife, Laila, was their single source of income, causing financial stress on the couple with four children, three of which were in college. Their hopes were lifted when Adil was told about the WalkAid System, a device that uses functional electrical stimulation to help a person with Adil’s condition walk again. However, Adil and Laila soon learned that they would not be able to afford the WalkAid System in addition to the intensive rehab that would be needed so he could understand how to use it.
Luckily, an employee at WalkAid referred Adil and Laila to the Joseph Groh Foundation and, due to the wonderful grant, Adil obtained the WalkAid System and has already experienced wonderful success. His muscle is starting to regenerate and not atrophy, bringing positive thoughts back to Adil and Laila.
