The Ban on R22 Refrigerant

R-22 Refrigerant Phasing Out

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) determined that R-22 refrigerant (also known as the brand FREON®), a common refrigerant for residential heat pumps and air conditioning systems, is not environmentally-friendly. The EPA is regulating the production and use of refrigerants and eventually all of the air conditioning and heat pump refrigerants that contain chlorine will be eliminated.

What does this mean for you?

If your home has a heating and air conditioning system that uses R-22 refrigerant, you don’t need to panic or run out to purchase a new system. Production of R-22 refrigerant is winding down, and while the costs will increase, production will go on until 2020. At that point recycled refrigerants should be accessible for a while.

As a result of the change, Comfort Masters Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning in Wheeling provides R410A, a more environmentally friendly choice for refrigerants which lowers the impact on the ozone layer. Up to 50% of home energy costs may go toward heating and cooling the home.
